5 Books to Read this Summer

June 25, 2017

Every summer I tell myself that I am going to read a few books, but if you are anything like me, I have a hard time finding or choosing books that interest me!

I have a long list that I still need to get through this summer, but here is my ‘Top 5’ list!

5. Screwtape Letters – C.S. Lewis
One of the many great works by the ever-talented theologian and Christian apologetics expert, C.S. Lewis. I read this book in high school, and I come back to excerpts of it quite often! It is a powerful conveyance of spiritual warfare through a series of letters from a senior demon to his nephew, a junior tempter, whose job it is to draw ‘The Patient’ away from God. It is beautifully written and causes self-reflection to examine your own life, the temptations you may face, and what divine resisting forces you can place against them.

4. Love Does – Bob Goff
Bob Goff has had quite the journey in life, and it is fun to relive many of his experiences as he ties in life stories to insights that God has shown him along the way. The overall message: a life lived to the fullest is a life loving to the fullest. If that sounds at all intriguing or inspiring, trust me, you want to pick up this book! You will not believe the crazy stories he has to share!

3. Launch Your Dream – Dale Partridge
Dale Partridge is a best-selling author, award winning speaker, and successful entrepreneur. He has launched over half a dozen multi-million dollar companies, and advises many other successful businesses. But, he is much more than just a businessman in that he seeks to pursue the Lord first and foremost. This year I have been learning a lot about entrepreneurship, so when I came across this book from another blogger’s page, I ordered it immediately! This quote sparked Dale to launch his first business, and if it stirs anything at all in your heart or ‘business’ brain, you may want to read it too: “If you don’t build your dream, someone will hire you to build theirs.”

2. A Severe Mercy – Sheldon Vanauken
In autobiographical form, Sheldon Vanauken writes about his wife, friendship with C.S. Lewis, and conversion to Christianity. It is a story of love, sacrifice, and ultimately, transformation. In this book you get it all: love, discovery, loss, and faith! This is a great message we all can be reminded of – the severe and saving mercy and grace of our beloved Savior, Jesus Christ!

1. Garden City – John Mark Comer
John Mark Comer is a pastor from Portland, Oregon, and this book is full of wisdom on work and rest. I loved this book, especially in the stage of life that I am in now: transitioning from school to work. It was so insightful to read about God’s intention and purpose for us as His creation, and I felt so much more purposeful and confident in the areas God has placed me in by reading John’s interpretations and insights alongside God’s Word. This book will change your life, the way you rest, and the way you work!
